Join Us - Volunteering at GLAD |
 |
GLAD welcomes volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Volunteers and interns
contribute invaluably to our work toward Equal Justice Under Law. Please
consider getting involved in the following ways:
Legal InfoLine
One exciting way to volunteer at GLAD is to staff our Legal InfoLine in our Boston office one weekday afternoon each week.
InfoLine volunteers provide information and resources to people throughout New England regarding legal issues related
to their sexual orientation, HIV status, and gender identity and expression — staffing the Infoline is
frontline work with people experiencing discrimination, forming families,
or seeking benefits and protections under the law.
Volunteers receive extensive training in legal issues
that affect LGBT individuals and families, and people living with HIV.
As a Legal InfoLine volunteer, you
will:
- Provide legal information and resources to people seeking help on issues regarding their
sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and/or HIV status;
- Help people find their bearings in
our complicated legal system;
- Connect people to lawyers in their area, or to other community organizations
that will help them stand up for their civil rights;
- Help educate the public about positive legal precedents GLAD wins in the courts; and
- Make a difference in the movement for LGBT and HIV civil rights.
How to join the Legal InfoLine
GLAD trains new volunteers for the Legal InfoLine two times each year,
in April and October. No prior legal experience is needed. We ask new trainees to make a commitment to volunteer one
weekday afternoon per week from 1:30 - 4:30 pm for at least six months.
The next training will take place in October, 2008.

Internships
GLAD offers internships in all areas of the organization’s work – supporting our litigation, educating the
public about civil rights, and fundraising for equal justice under law.
Interns are hired on an academic schedule -- for the entire school year, an individual semester, or the summer.
Summer internships are full time; academic year internships are part time (10-15 hrs/wk).
All GLAD internships are unpaid.
Law Clerking/Legal Internship
For
law students only. Law students seeking exposure to and experience in civil rights and discrimination
litigation should apply. Legal interns work directly with GLAD staff attorneys to do substantive legal research and
writing, participate in strategy discussions, and attend depositions, hearings, and client meetings.
Public Education Internship
For undergraduates, graduate students,
and community members. Public Education Interns help research and write educational materials for print
and web publishing, respond to information requests about legal rights, educate community members about what to do if
they experience discrimination, maintain resource files and coordinate educational forums. Interns also represent GLAD
at community events, sharing information and literature about GLAD’s services.
